“ST. O’DONNELL’S SELECT GALLERY” PROFILE : VANESSA NGUYEN
Vanessa is a Sydney based graphic artist and illustrator.
Her work is highly influenced by nature and the female body form. As a result, detailed line work is used to allure and conjure a sense of mystery to the characters and subjects she presents.
Who are you and what do you do?
Hello! I’m Vanessa. Sometimes graphics artist, sometimes illustrator. But mainly all-round creative.
What couldn’t you do without?
Haha morning coffee, pencil, paper and an open well-lit workspace.
Name 3 artists you’d like to be compared to?
Oh wow, I suppose I’d have to say my favourite artists, though I know I’m in no way up to their calibre,Takato Yamamoto, Del Kathryn Barton, Audrey Kawasaki and Mark Ryden. I’d be so flattered to be compared to them. Sorry that was 4.
What would be your dream project?
Oooo, a Vanessa Nguyen x music artist collaboration would be really fun. I’d love to dabble in motion graphics and do a music video. Yea, that’d be fun. Ok, I need to make this happen.
What do you dislike about working in the art industry?
Not so much dislike, but I’m so bad at the social media game. These days it’s all about keeping people in the loop and making sure you’ve always got something on show for people to see. I don’t know how people just churn out content on demand. For me, it takes time and I want my work to mean something or derive from real experience.
What art do you most identify with?
It’s funny, I’m usually drawn to very colorful and quite minimal art. Which is the opposite of the art I make. But i suppose I identify with works that tell a story. Something dreamy, surreal, moody, dark. Yeaaa
You can catch Vanessa at “St. O’Donnell’s Select Gallery #002” presented by Young Henry’s and Stolen Spirits on the 27th of August.
