“ST. O’DONNELL’S SELECT GALLERY” PROFILE : YEMISUL
Olivia Suleimon is perhaps one of the busiest DJs in Sydney, consistently heralding local lineups and selecting the utmost suitable gems repping the Girls crew and IZMs Mag. We’re stoked to have her doing a set at the event so sat down for a brief catch up.
Where are you from and where are you headed?
I’m originally from London but I’ve been brought up in Sydney and my mum’s Australian.
Where am I headed?
Hmmm… in a location sense, possibly New York, in life sense… no idea, and I like that.
You’ve created an incredibly successful platform showcasing a huge amount of creatives who’d otherwise fall under the radar. What’s the next step for IZMZ?
Thank you! And World Domination is what Ebony and I have in store for Izmz, we would love to take it world wide and explore every facet and sub culture the globe has to offer!
What’s the meaning behind the name Yemisul?
I’m half Nigerian and my Nigerian name is Oluwayemi, that side of the family refuses to call me Olivia and I go by Yemi when I’m with them. My last name is Suleimon so I just kind of put the two together and came up with Yemisul.
You were doing some sets in the UK recently, how’d that all come about?
The universe was very good to me and everything just kind of fell in my lap all thanks to instagram. I was able to link with some really cool people while I was over there who were quite into the Grime scene and involved with Radar Radio. I was also able to play at the Ace Hotel for a collective called BOSSY LDN which was so much fun!
One Grime artist who’s consistently in your DJ rotation?
I try and drop Novelist when I can, he’s just got sooo much Energy but you can’t not play Skepta.
You can catch Yemisul at “St. O’Donnell’s Select Gallery #002” presented by Young Henry’s and Stolen Spirits on the 27th of August.
